Healthy Living Pharmacy
A new approach
The potential of community pharmacies to become healthy living hubs at the heart of local communities has been recognised since The Nuffield Report in 1986. Yet in 2011 – twenty five years on – we are just developing a model to systematically manage the large scale change necessary to make this happen.
“Most leaders contemplating change know that people matter. It is all too tempting, however, to dwell on the plans and processes, which don’t talk back and don’t respond emotionally, rather than face up to the more difficult and more critical human issues.”
In the past, those leading change in pharmacy have focused more on strategic planning – rather than the human side of change management. Work on HLP over the last few years has been different. It has recognised that as well as garnering the support and vision of strategists and formal leaders, mobilising front line staff and creating ownership are the keys to delivering big change in practice. Likewise, having a group of enthusiastic change agents working across the health economy to create links and support communication is essential. This is the difference the HLP programme has achieved.

Community pharmacies in Portsmouth, Southampton and the Isle of Wight have been given the opportunity to commit to becoming a healthy living pharmacy during 2010/11. The PCTs are working with Hampshire and Isle of Wight LPC and other local stakeholders to develop and implement a framework and to help support pharmacies to boost their role in helping customers improve and maintain their health.
Seventeen Portsmouth pharmacies have now been awarded the Healthy Living Pharmacy status.
Many local pharmacies are already offering some of the additional services that will become part of the framework such as stop smoking, healthy weight management and minor ailments services.
HLP newsletters and other information is available below and a prospectus detailing the initial framework (continually evolving) and implementation plan is available to download from the NHS Portsmouth website.
